OBERLIN -- Loretta "Rita" Nelson, 87, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan.
She was born Sept. 27, 1915, in Sheridan County, to Eliphalet J. and Cinda Ellen (Reed) Foster. She grew up in Sheridan and Decatur Counties. She attended Green Valley School, O'Toole School and Decatur Community High School.
On Aug. 17, 1934, she married Arthur Nelson in Oberlin. They moved to Minnesota, where they farmed. In 1943, they returned to Decatur County where they farmed briefly then owned and operated a service station. She also worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Thomsen.
She was a member of the United Church of Oberlin and a Representative of the Silver Hair Legislature.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Robert Whetzel; and brothers, Lorenzo and Lyman Foster.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur of Oberlin; daughters, Janette and husband, Howard Votapka, Idella Frickey and Patricia Whetzel all of Oberlin; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, 10 a.m., at Pauls Funeral Home with the Rev. Nolan Pierce and the Rev. Barbara Pierce officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation is Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials may be given in her name to the United Church of Oberlin.
