Hayes Center -- William E. Smith, 66 died Wednesday (March 5, 2003) at Community Hospital in McCook.
He was born May 25, 1936, to Earl Raymond and LaRue G. (Walbridge) Smith. He graduated from Palisade High School in 1954, and from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1961.
On Sept. 11, 1962, he married Shizuko Ishida in Tokyo, Japan. He was in the banking business until 1972, and then went into farming.
He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, the McCook and Palisade Masonic Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Shizuko of Hayes Center; a son, Dolan Smith and wife, Charlie of Palisade; a brother Gene Smith and wife, Janet of Coronado, Calif.; and one step-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will be in the Palisade Cemetery with a Masonic commital.
Visitation will be Sunday, 4-8 p.m., and Monday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
