Jane 'Ernst' Smith

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jane "Ernst" Smith, 88, died Tuesday (March 11, 2003) at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, Calif.

She was born April 18, 1914, in Aurora, to Gale and Grace (Merrill) Ernst. She grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1932. She graduated from McCook Junior College in 1934, and began teaching in a rural school. She moved to Denver, Colo., where she received her Registered Nursing degree from the Denver Children's Hospital. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Denver. For 28 years, she was Chief Nurse in the Veterans Administration Hospitals in California. She retired in 1974. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Kenneth in 1985.

Survivors include a sister, Rebecca and husband, Van Cassell of Citrus Height, Calif.

An inurnment is being planned at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
