OBERLIN -- John D. Shirley, 73, died Monday (March 31, 2003) at his home in Oberlin.
He was born June 24, 1929, in Frontier County, to Walter Edward and Marie (Waggoner) Shirley. He was raised in McCook and attended McCook Schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On March 21, 1947, he married Doris F. Scott. He resided in various places in the Western United States, but most recently resided in Oberlin. He was a mechanic and truck driver.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; brother, Joseph Shirley; and two sisters, Geraldine Lunardi and Katherine Harmon.
Survivors include two sons, John J. Shirley and wife, Chris of Livermore, Calif., and James Shirley of Tonganoxie, Kan.; five daughters, Deanna and husband, Robert Castle and Chris and husband, Curtis Walston of Oberlin, Carolyn Shirley of Colby, Kan., Patty and husband, Rod Steinmetz of Two Buttes, Colo., and Donna and husband, Shawn Futrell of Garden Valley, Calif.; his former wife, Doris Fringer of Oberlin; one brother, Dick Shirley of Salt Lake City; four sisters, Pauline Evans and Rita Chambers of Folsom, Calif., Jane Blume of Indianola and Pat and husband Dip Idigpio of Marietta, Okla.; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin with the Rev. Matthew Vazhappily and the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
A parish vigil service will be Thursday, 7:30 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin.
Visitation is Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
