SELDEN -- Laura Mary Berls, 89, died Sunday (April 20, 2003) at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born June 10, 1913, in rural Leoville, Kan., to George and Louise (Meitl) Schroer. She was raised in the Leoville and Selden areas and graduated from Leoville High School in 1931.
On Jan. 12, 1932, she married Joseph Berls in Leoville. They lived in Leoville and Dresden before moving to Selden in 1958. She was a homemaker and had been a nurses aid for 15 years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Rose Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella and the senior citizens center, all of Selden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe in 1976; son-in-law, Ross Shipley; five brothers, Joseph, Jerry, Bill, Al and Bob; and two sisters, Betty Lou Kogl and Thersa Goscha.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony Berls and wife, Janet of Kansas City, Mo., and Larry Berls and wife, Sheila of McCook; four daughters, Maxine Shipley of Hoxie, Kan., Mary Rose and husband, Bob Griffin of Frankfort, Kan., Joyce and husband, Howard Chaffin of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Linda and husband, Richard Moses of Imperial; one brother, Jim Schroer and wife, Betty of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Rose Mary Lamberson of Wichita, Kan., and Dee and husband, Bob LaGesse of Fort Meyers, Fla.; 22 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden with the Rev. James Hoover, Sister Marilyn Wall and Deacon Stan Chappin officiating. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Leoville.
A parish vigil service will be Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the funeral home in Selden.
Visitation is Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given in her name.
