I would like to bring something to the attention of McCook Daily Gazette area wrestling and basketball coaches.

The Gazette sports department plans to publish its Gazetteland All-Area Boys and Girls Basketball Teams about two weeks after all of our teams are finished competing in state tournament play.

The Nebraska girls state basketball tournament takes place March 7-8 at Lincoln.

The Nebraska boys state tournament takes place March 14-15 at Lincoln.

The Kansas State Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments are scheduled for March 12-15.

The likely target date for publishing the All-Area Basketball Teams is the weekend of March 28-29.

Right now, there are two girls teams likely headed for the Class D-1 state tournament -- Cambridge and Republican Valley.

Both are competing for district titles tonight.

The top area boys teams are McCook, ranked first in Class B with a 19-5 record and Chase County-Imperial, ranked second in Class C-1 with a 20-0 record.

Boys teams from Wauneta-Palisade, Cambridge and Wheatland won district titles Thursday night.

We also have plans to publish our Coaches All-Area Wrestling Team, but we still have to wait on the Kansas State Wrestling Championship, which take place Friday and Saturday.

There are three Kansas teams in our coverage area competing at the Class 3-2-1A state tournament at Fort Hays State University's Gross Memorial Coliseum -- Atwood, Oberlin and St. Francis.

Of course, we crowned three state champions at the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships.

The trio of McCook's Nathan Reicks (Class B 189 pounds) Stuart Frazier (Class B 215 pounds) and Chase County-Imperial's Jay Wood (Class C 152 pounds) would have to headline the All-Area Wrestling Team.

Other state placers deserve consideration.

We received a lot of help from McCook wrestling coach Dean Reicks on last year's squad and hope to get plenty of help from Bison assistant Jeff Gross while coach Reicks is serving his country.

As you know, Dean Reicks and three other area wrestling coaches were pressed into military service when their guard units were activated as part of the United States' military buildup in preparation for possible conflict in Iraq.

But even with that complication, the All-Area Wrestling Team could go off without a hitch.

We plan to send all area basketball and coaches asking them to nominate their best players and wrestlers for the All-Area Teams.

Included in the letters will be a request for team and individual statistics and all-league honors among other things.

If coaches would like to beat the rush, they can start sending us their information now.

Coaches can e-mail their nominations and stats to or

It would be easier if the e-mails were sent as a cut-and-paste as if you were just writing us a friendly note.

However, e-mails can also be sent in a text or simple text format.

Coaches can also FAX their nominations to us at (308) 345-7881.

Coaches can call the sports department at (308) 345-4500 ext. 114 or toll free at 1-800-269-1426 ext. 114.

We would appreciate your help.
