Air Force band to perform at opportune time

Wednesday, October 17, 2001

Citizens of Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas have responded in record numbers to the invitation to hear Thursday night's concert presentation by the United States Air Force's Heartland of America Band.

Twelve hundred tickets were printed for the concert. All have been picked up, virtually assuring a full house for the event, which will be at the McCook Memorial Auditorium beginning at 7 p.m.

"We are so very fortunate to have the Air Force band appear at this time," said Gene O. Morris, publisher of the McCook Daily Gazette, which is sponsoring the concert. "In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, it has been uplifting to see the love that Americans have expressed for their country. This is another opportunity, here at home, to join in tribute to our nation," the publisher said.

As part of Thursday's ceremonies, a local color guard will advance the flag. Members of the fire department, law enforcement, and the Army Reserve will lead the way, followed by an American Legion contingent composed of representatives of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm.

The concert which follows will be a tribute to the past and an inspiration for the future.

The 40-member concert band, based at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, is known throughout the United States for its outstanding performances and recordings. Pleasing audiences since 1943, the band sets the standard for excellence in today's military.

The band's music ranges from classical to contemporary, with special emphasis placed on patriotism and preservation of our national heritage.

We can't wait to hear them Thursday night and join with friends and neighbors throughout the area in expressing our love and support for this great land we call home: the United States of America.
