Faith out of control

Thursday, October 18, 2001

I've heard on TV, and seen in this Open Forum, that the reason we had the World Trade Center and Pentagon terror incidents is because of America's sins. Pat Robertson, and Jerry Falwell, on the Sept. 13 broadcast of the 700 Club said, "this is God's punishment, and the people to blame are the pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays and lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, people for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, you helped this happen."

Others say we need to pray more and put up a prayer shield so that this doesn't happen again. Guided by their religious light, the 19 hijackers didn't just go off the deep end. They acted in concert, and did so in the name of their god. They believe that there is only one true god, and that god is Allah. They do not believe in the Father, the Son or the Holy Ghost. They do not believe that Jesus was a god, or that he rose from the death, for he was just a prophet.

This particular Muslim sect thinks that God is on their side, and this is what God wanted them to do. The point I want to make is that these 19 individuals had faith in what they were doing. Their faith and beliefs directed them to take their own lives, and thousands of others. Does your faith allow you to take your own life? Is God on your side or their side? Do you think this act is justified? Do you think God ordered this to happen? I don't think so. And if it was, I don't think God is a kind and loving God. If faith has the power to do this, then faith can cause us to have false beliefs. There are good people and evil people on this earth, but it takes faith or a belief to make good people turn evil. Religion ultimately bears a huge responsibility for this tragedy, and I believe those with religious faith will be blind to this fact.

The war against terrorism must also include a challenge to irrational religious beliefs. This isn't sins out of control, it's faith out of control.
