Use common sense safety procedures while hunting

Friday, October 26, 2001

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has released a report saying there will be one hunter killed and 10 injured in hunting accidents this year.

Statistically, that's only 0.011 percent of the estimated 100,000 hunters who will hit the fields Saturday morning. There's not much of a chance of it happening to "me."

But, the fact remains that statistics show there will be 11 people in Nebraska on the receiving end of a bullet and 11 people accidentally pulling a trigger that was not meant for another human being.

With a little common sense, those numbers can be decreased.

From their youth, most outdoorsmen have been taught these common-sense rules: -Keep your gun pointed to the ground or in the air while walking through fields.

- Don't cross fences or jump a ditch with a loaded gun.

- Always assume a gun is loaded.

- Never shoot at a noise or movement.

- When in the field, never sneak up on another hunter. Call out in a loud voice and stay undercover until you have been recognized.

- Do not carry a loaded gun in the vehicle.

-Alcohol and guns don't mix. -Don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to pull it

- Always know what's behind your target.

We encourage each man, woman and child who spends their weekend hunting to have fun, enjoy the bounty our rich fields and pastures have to offer and be safe.

Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas have long been popular hunting areas for outdoorsmen around the nation.

Please exercise every caution -- we'd like to see you all at it again next year.
