Letter from the village

Tuesday, November 6, 2001

Dear Editor,

Stratton used to be a quiet little town where if you had a problem, you would call the person and discuss it with them instead of running to the village board.

I recently had a couple of days off, which I enjoyed by riding my horse and leading colts around town.

Today I received a letter from the Village saying I had violated an ordinance that I didn't even know existed, about cleaning up if your animal defecates on Village property, other than designated areas. It seems someone had complained about my horse defecating in the street.

If that person would have had the gumption to call me, I would have been more than happy to clean up manure. I spent most of my youth riding in this town and stopping to visit with people about the good 'ole days when they used to ride. No one ever complained, in fact, they used anything left behind on their flowers or gardens.

Cleaning up the horse manure is not what concerns me. I do that on a regular basis anyhow. It's the change in the attitude of our community that worries me. I find it ironic that people move out of the cities to these small towns to get away from nonsense and then try to make our small towns act like cities.
