California perspective

Thursday, January 10, 2002

Dear Editor,

As I was born a raised in McCook, Neb., I have been a Big Red fan all my life. My son, Kris, was only Nebraska born, and raised in California.

He took me to the Rose Bowl game and this was an e-mail response from him a couple days after the game:

Although the event was memorable and enjoyable too, the football team did not come close to the fans expectations. I've never in my life seen such a tremendous showing of support, not from fans of any team in the country from any other sport. If they held a national championship specifically for boosters, there isn't a team in the land that could rival that sea of red. While the team and the coach might feel bad in defeat, the husker fans should all take pride in a first class showing!

Thanks,

Kris

Thinking as positive about the experience as I can, I would embellish his comment by saying, if the Big Red football team was as coached and prepared as the Big Red Band and had the enthusiasm of their Big Red fans, they would have overwhelmed Miami and be holding the BCS National Championship trophy.
