Racing benefits

Wednesday, February 13, 2002

The stock car races generate quite a bit of revenue for the city of McCook. Last year, several thousand dollars were paid back to local drivers who in turn spent their money in McCook.

A number of racers came in from out of town, hit our restaurants, and several of them stayed at the Holiday Inn Express overnight every Friday night and then drove to North Platte and raced.

If it wasn't for the stock car racing, and them helping pay the 1-cent city sales tax, which at least one business does not do, it would not have been possible to install the lighting for them to play softball and baseball.

I'm in favor of the kids, but I also like the stock car races. Before we go and kill something that's making money for the city of McCook, we ought to take a closer look at it.

I'm sure most of the people who live around the race track moved in there since the race track started, I know at least 30 years ago. They knew that race track was there, so they have no right to complain.
