Phone scam alert

Wednesday, March 6, 2002

Dear Editor,

It has come to the attention of the McCook Police Department that another phone scam has hit the McCook area.

The latest scam involves a caller advising that you have been entered into a $10,000 drawing that is to take place in June. When the victim requested a call back number or a number for customer service the caller explained that the victim didn't need that number because their name had already been entered by them by Visa and MasterCard.

The caller then asked which card they get the best service from.

The victim suspecting the scam did the right thing and did not provide any information and hung up on the caller.

Just to remind folks, don't give any personal information to phone solicitors. When in doubt, it is best to err on the side of caution and hang up.
