Keep tax money local

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

Dear Editor:

Congratulations to our County Commissioners for keeping their purchases local !!!

These people should be commended for keeping our tax dollars in our community.

I wish I could say the same thing for our City Council.

I have kept quiet long enough about this because of the fear of being boycotted by our city.

I think it's time the citizens of McCook knew how their "sales tax" dollars are being spent. When they purchased the lighting for the ball park we submitted a bid that was very competitive and I was present at the meeting when the bids were opened.

Our bid was $1000or 1percent higher than the bid they purchased the lighting from, when I mentioned that they should keep the business local I was told that they had to go with the low bid.

I also offered to match the low bid but was refused.

I was furious and felt the money was collected HERE so why shouldn't it stay HERE.

I made several calls to council members and was told that the law states they have to accept the lowest bid.

Are the rules different for our county than they are for the city?

I also want to commend Marty Conroy for standing up for our local taxpayers as he was the only one that supported local purchases. I think that in the future any purchases with our "sales tax" dollars should be kept local. Respectfully
