What were they thinking?

Thursday, April 25, 2002

What were our educational leaders thinking? Who thought this up and why did our school system condone treating our children in this manner?

The emotional stress unnecessarily placed on our children was totally inappropriate. Our school system is supposed to lead by teaching young people, not create results by fear and intimidation.

I feel this "exercise" was mental abuse to the young people in attendance. To tell the student body that fellow students were killed was cruel. And, were the parents of these students aware of this event? What could have happened if this information was given to them in this manner. How would you have felt if someone stood up in front of your peers and told you of the death of a loved one? I know that everyone is concerned about drinking and driving, but using this type of fear tactic will not accomplish anything but emotional distress in our young people. Parental involvement and positive reinforcement will go much farther in keeping our young people safe.
