Wrong impression

Thursday, May 9, 2002

Dear Editor,

This is a belated response to an article written by Sharyn Skiles.

It was printed in the April 9, 2002, edition of the Gazette.

In the article, she wrote that the American Heart Association held a fund raiser at the McCook Eagles Club. This is true, and it is hoped they come back. Theirs is a good and worthwhile cause.

From there on, I'm not sure if Sharyn just didn't know what she was writing about, had the wrong information (was she there?) or just isn't very good at her job.

According to her, the club manager should enforce a stricter dress code for the waiters and waitresses. The waiters and waitresses were not, or to the best of my knowledge, have never been employees of the Eagles Club.

Most of them were McCook business people and they were part of the Heart Association function.

The person who wore the hospital gown in a P.A., I was told. (Sharyn, he wore shorts under the gown, as did the Hawaiian hula grass skirt wearers.) I for one thought it was very funny. Ugly hairy legs and all. (They were all men).

With regard to the sultry song that the men supposedly liked and the women supposedly hated. HELLOOO??? Damn Yankees, if I know what I'm talking about, came out somewhere in the late 1940s or early '50s. Censorship back then was very strict, so it couldn't have been too offensive.

By the way, I went and saw the performance of "Damn Yankees" a couple of weeks prior to the Heart Fund Drive at the Eagles Club. Angie Reiners did one outstanding job of performing "Lola," one of the tougher roles in the musical. Everyone who performed in the musical did a fantastic job. You all got a standing ovation from me and the rest of the audience.

Now to the tip issue.

All the tips that were solicited (part of the show) were turned over the the Heart Association, and totaled almost $800. Not bad!

Sharyn (solicited or not) you can't possibly believe that regular waiters or waitresses make those kind of tips? Surely not.

Under no circumstances do employees of the Eagles Club or any other establishment, to my knowledge, ask for tips. And there IS a dress code, but it only applies to employees of the establishment.
