Move the track

Monday, June 17, 2002

Dear Editor,

The discussion of the race track seems to be going on and on. I don't think people actually hate racing. It's the location. I live across the street from the track and I'm telling you it is noisy and dirty. It is impossible to compare the noise to anything else. Be it the Red Willow County Fair, ballgames or the go-cart races, and even the loud boomboxes and stereos. Now if a car parked outside my house and ran his music as loud as it would go for four to five hours then I would call the authorities.

A fantastic solution to the problem would be for a race fan or Mr. Sailors to donate land five or 10 miles out of town, or use some county land out of town. People would still come to town and support the businesses and everybody would be happy.

I would like to ask some questions that I have asked some folks and they don't seem to know the answer. Does the racing association use the county machinery and if so, do they pay and how much? They haul a lot of water, do they pay for it like we citizens do? Has there been noise level tests on the races and other activites and what are the results?

I would like to comment on what I saw last Saturday morning. The wind was blowing just awful. The trash that had been left by the fans on Friday night was blowing all over. I noticed a little later some fellow in a pickup driving very slow and picking up the trash that had blown int0 into the fence and later a couple with bags picking up the trash. I want to thank them for doing this and I do hope the fans can find the trash containers so these people won't have to pick up after them every week. Maybe you should put more containers around.
