Fair promises to rank with the best ever

Monday, July 22, 2002

Time is short to take in the Red Willow County Fair, which wraps up Monday evening with the demolition derby.

But there's still plenty of time, and there are still plenty of events to make a trip to the fairgrounds worth your time.

Just before talented riders and ropers take to the arena for the PRCA Rodeo on Saturday night, the Miss Southwest Nebraska Rodeo queen will be crowned. Taking part in the festivities will be our own Lori Bortner, Miss Rodeo Nebraska. The rodeo will be staged again Sunday night, following up a full day of entertaining activities. They include a draft horse pull at 1:30 p.m., chore relay at 4 p.m., and cheerleader contest at 5 p.m.

The rodeo is at 8 p.m. both nights.

On your way to the grandstands and the Midway, take time to wander through the merchant booths and 4-H buildings. 4-Hers always appreciate someone taking time to enjoy the results of their labor -- or perhaps point out to a companion the work of a child or grandchild.

And, don't forget to take in a food booth or treat stand -- a cool drink or frosty treat is mandatory when the thermometer clears the century mark.

But despite the heat, this year's Red Willow County Fair promises to rank right up there with the best.
