Good job, Mustangs!

Monday, December 16, 2002

Dear Editor,

It is quite obvious that Sports Editor, John Mesh, never went to the Rep Valley/Brady game on Tuesday. If he was, then he needs to not have the job as Sports Editor as he obviously doesn't know what a press is. If you are going to be judging coaches and teams, I would think you had best better have your facts straight first -- and be really sure about them.

Coach Troester played every team person he had on his bench. In tournaments you can only take 12 girls -- so that is what he took and played every one of them. The cheerleaders were ready to come in -- but weren't on the roster, so couldn't play. He didn't press the other team. He also didn't leave his starters in for the whole game. The score was not run up, they just were a young, inexperienced team and were unable to hold off a team like RV.

When they entered the tournament in McCook, did they expect all teams they play to "stand near half court and hold the ball on his or her hip and let the clock run out?"

No, they knew they were going to have to play basketball when they got there. Was RV supposed to stand there and do nothing because Brady was inexperienced? No. Mesh says that "I doubt if anyone wants to watch a 100-9 game." Who wants to watch a game with players standing at half court with a ball on their hip? If they don't want to play ball, then they shouldn't come.

You compare them to the McCook boys team who "needed to record their first win of the season and use the game to prepare to play a big Kansas Class 5A school in Ottawa."

So, does that mean the Bison boys needed to win, but the RV girls didn't because they aren't playing a Kansas school? Come on, they need the practice just as much.

I wouldn't compare RV girls to Bison boys. Who got the big parade, tons a pictures put in the paper, big writeups, free shirts and whoopla about winning state and who didn't? Oh, so this is a fifth win for the Mustangs, therefore they don't deserve to have a big deal made out of it.

Don't you realize what pressure that puts on the younger kids coming up to know that they have a legacy to live up to? They don't want to let everyone down by not winning state because that is what RV does every year. That's a lot of pressure on the kids and coaches So, if McCook wins again next year, are you going to make less of a deal about it? Right!

By the way, if you read your papers any, you would know that this same team played Elm Creek last weekend and got beat 102-9. Do you suppose they ran up the score?'' No. The next time Mr. Mesh has the flu, I would suggest he get someone who knows how to play the game of basketball to report back to him so he can get his facts straight. And I say good job Mustangs!
