Don't look now, but 'ol St. Nick here

Monday, December 23, 2002

Have you heard the news? Santa Claus is coming to town. Really. We're not kidding. The Jolly 'Ol Gentleman from the North Pole -- famous world-wide for his gift-giving exploits -- will be gracing McCook with his presence (and presents) both Satuday and Sunday.

Children, and their parents, grandparents and friends, can see Santa today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sehnert's Bakery and the Bieroc Cafe, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. this afternoon at the McCook Chamber of Commerce office, located at 107 Norris Avenue.

At the Chamber, Santa will be joined by the McCook High School Cheerleaders, who will be wrapping presents from 1 to 5 as a fund-raising project. There will also be Christmas music, provided by Kim Weber.

Santa will be back in action Sunday afternoon, hearing the Christmas wishes of youngsters and greeting visitors at the Chamber office. Santa will be joined by the Chamber Brass and Sara Hester for the Sunday open house, which will begin at 1 p.m.

The Chamber get-together will be the start of a busy afternoon for Santa and his helpers. Later Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m., Christmas festivities will take place at the McCook Elks Lodge at East 7th and I streets. During the event, Santa and the Elk elves will treat all comers to popcorn, sweet treats and videos on the large screen.

Meanwhile, uptown, it will be "Tea Time." From 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, the Chamber office and participating Chamber stores will be hosting shopping guests for tea, as well as coffee, cookies and other delicious treats.

Blessed by the sunniest pre-Christmas weather in recent years -- if not of all time -- it's been a busy and pleasant yuletide season.

With a big assist from Santa and his helpers, the final weekend will add a festive flourish to the holiday celebrating.

As the days before Christmas dwindle to a precious few, let's take time to remember those who find themselves in less fortunate circumstances. On the local level, we encourage your consideration of The Pantry and the McCook Toy Box. Because of the dedicated efforts of these two organizations, the community has been able to brighten the lives of hundreds of families and children in need this season. Let's start now to prepare for continued giving by the two groups in 2003.

Glad tidings of good will to you and your loved ones. We are fortunate to live in an area far removed from the troubles that afflict many parts of the world. This weekend, take time for a trip downtown. See Santa, have a sip of tea, sample a sweet treat, and share Christmas greetings with your friends and neighbors.
