Ike's warning

Tuesday, January 21, 2003

Dear Editor,

I have taken note of the fact that two highly celebrated holidays in our country are the birthdays of Jesus Christ and Martin Luther King -- both of whom condemned violence as a solution to human problems. While worshiping at the shrine of these two apostles of peace, we follow the lead of "a popular president" who advocates war (a form of terrorism) against a country which has never attacked the United States and does not now nor ever has had any weapon of mass destruction which we do not have.

In order to fuel the most dangerous of all human emotions, "hate," he vilifies a corrupt foreign leader for doing the same things he was doing when we subsidized him and enhanced his power.

If the people of our nation and their representatives in Congress either authorize or allow our "popular president" to adopt a "preventative strike policy," the following results are inevitable: We have betrayed the ideals which gave the nation birth, scrapped the heart of international law, violated our own Constitution and ushered in the most dangerous period of violence and terrorism in human history. In addition, we have destroyed the moral authority of our great nation.

If we are to take funds from education, health, economic development, job creation and food for hungry children to disregard President Eisenhower's warning and allow the military industrial complex to dictate political policy, let us do so with full knowledge of its consequences.
