Cut spending

Thursday, March 6, 2003

Dear Editor,

I am writing this to address the McCook City Council and the citizens of McCook.

Where do they think the money will come from by raising the city sales tax again?

Rural America is in one of the worst economies in recent history. The state of Nebraska lost 1,000 farms and ranches last year. A big percentage of the local economy is agriculture. By putting additional sales tax on items to pay for the recent money loss will drive future business and future shoppers away from McCook.

If the city cannot function within their budget, maybe they need to cut their spending, not raise taxes.

Do they really need a city manager, city clerk, city finance director, fire chief, police chief, public works director and so forth? Could they combine some positions?

What about all the new vehicles that I see the city officials driving on business and personal use?

If everybody who does business in McCook has to pay the additional sales tax, they should have a say in it also. If it would go before a county vote and pass, then we all would have to pay the tax and go on with life.

If you do not want to pay this additional sales tax, the businesses outside of the city limits would welcome your business.

Larry Shields,

McCook
