Thanks, and come again!

Thursday, April 24, 2003

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank all area residents who donated blood recently during the height of the current Iraqi conflict. It was a terrific display of support for our troops and allowed the Red Cross to meet the military's request for blood, and provide an adequate supply to meet our local patient needs.

While there is always a need for blood in order to meet a personal or national crisis, the Department of Defense has indicated that, thankfully, they do not anticipate additional support of their blood supply and have asked that all civilian blood collection agencies -- including the Red Cross -- cease all appeals for blood that directly reference the war effort.

Once again we will focus our efforts on meeting the blood needs of patients in the Midwest region.

I strongly encourage those individuals who, for the first time, so generously donated their time and life saving blood to please continue to do so. Your donations in the days, weeks and years to come are essential to meet patient needs everyday.

It is a fact that only 60 percent of the American population is eligible to donate blood but only 5 percent do!

Your donation is always important. And with each donation, you can help save up to three lives. Healthy donors are eligible to donate red blood cells every 56 days.

Sincerely,

Mark Thornhill

Chief Executive Officer

Midwest Region

American Red Cross
