Bartley tornadoes

Thursday, May 30, 2002

Don Burton stands outside his home northwest of Bartley Sunday, May 26, and watches three tornadoes threaten his neighbors' buildings. Susie Burton said the tornadoes sucked back up into the sky before causing any damages. "In fact, we had no wind," she remembers. "We got hail, and then it got silent. And it hailed again." This photograph was taken by Ed Barrett of Guadalajara, Mexico, who stopped to visit the Burtons en route to South Dakota. Red Willow County Sheriff Gene Mahon said the numerous tornadoes and funnels reported that evening seemed to have stayed in open fields; no damages were reported to his office.
