Hay cutting creates hazard

Tuesday, June 18, 2002

The Nebraska State Patrol asks drivers to use extra caution knowing that roadside haying permits are now being issued in areas of Nebraska due to drought conditions. Drivers should expect to encounter farm machinery on and adjacent to highways and interstates, including Interstate 80.

Drivers are reminded to maintain a safe following distance (slow-moving vehicles are likely), pass with care (farm implement might be over width), and use caution when approaching farm machinery actively harvesting hay along the roadside.

The operators of farm implement are reminded to make sure they have all the appropriate safety equipment including the proper signs, lighting, and permits. Although the state is issuing special permits to allow hay harvesting along highways and interstates, some areas are restricted due to congestion and safety concerns (i.e. interchanges, work zones, etc...).

"We understand the hardships farmers are facing because of the drought," Colonel Tom Nesbitt said. "We just want to make sure all possible safety precautions are taken so no one is injured or killed because of the roadside harvesting. We need the cooperation of every motorist to ensure that this attempt to aid farmers does not have negative consequences."
