Thursday, June 20, 2002

NORTH PLATTE -- The Mid Plains Board of Governors has decided to table some of its spending plans until it can be determined what the state of Nebraska will do during the special session of the Nebraska Legislature.

At its regular meeting at the North Platte Technical Campus, the finance committee decided not to forward a recommendation to purchase computers for the McCook and North Platte campuses for a total cost of $137,075 until it was determined how state budget cuts would affect the college.

In addition, the finance committee has decided not to pursue the purchase of 11 laptop computers.

The college may also begin paying less for insurance over the next three years following a vole to accept a bid from Arthur J. Gallagher and Co. to provide insurance in the amount of $169,646 annually over the next three years. The current insurance policy with Rosenburg Insurance is due to expire June 30.

In other action, the board approved the hire of Dr. Michael Chipps as vice-president of the North Platte campus. Chipps replaces Dr. Steve Hoyle who took a CEO position in Montana.

On the board's approval, the board has approved the search for an extended campus coordinator for Valentine.

Another new position approved by the board was an Area Distance Learning Coordinator.

The board also agreed to authorize the administration to complete a revenue bond issued for student-housing complex in North Platte at the McDonald Belton Campus not to exceed $4.1 million.

The board had previously approved an estimated cost of $2.0 million for the complex.
