City chlorinating distribution system

Friday, August 2, 2002

The McCook Water Department will be introducing chlorine into the water distribution system beginning Saturday, as a precautionary and preventive measure.

The chlorine treatment is being conducted in order to clear up a non-acute total coliform bacteria problem in the distribution system, according to city officials.

The duration of this treatment method is expected to be at least two weeks.

Even though the chlorine levels will occur at low levels, the public may experience a difference in the taste and odor of the tap water in some areas of the water distribution system. and chlorine may cause stress to tropical fish in aquariums that have not previously been treated with a chemical to dissipate chlorine.

Additional check sampling for total coliform bacteria will be conducted to monitor the effect of the chlorination treatment in various locations throughout the water system.

The city water department will advise the public when additional sampling indicates that the total coliform presence has been cleared from the water distribution system.
