Three vie for school seats

McCook's public school patrons will be served by two incumbents and one new board member following the general election Tuesday.

Three open seats exist. They will be filled by current board president Jim Coady and vice-president Greg Larson, and candidate Dawn Andersen. Board member Lori Watkins, who was completing the term of Doug Davidson, decided last spring not to run for the third vacancy.

Coady is a McCook native and a graduate of McCook schools. He has been on the school board for 10 years. He is a wrecker engineer for Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad. He and his wife, Jean, have three sons.

Coady promises to keep the education of the district's children his top priority. His goal is to continue to improve the school system. Coady stated before the primary election in May, "Although you might not always agree with my position on an issue, you can be sure that my position conforms to the law, and has the best interest of the students at heart."

Current vice-president Greg Larson is a credit manager. He and his wife, Cindy, have two sons.

Larson is completing his first term on the board. "Education is something I value, and by serving on the board, I can help with the education of the students."

Larson said officials of the school system constantly need to review curriculum offerings, continuing to challenge students.

Dawn Andersen is a homemaker. She and her husband, Wade, have two daughters and one son.

Andersen feels, "the bottom line is excellence in education." She said in May, "Money is tight, but instead of thinking, 'How can we make do with less?,' I would rather ask, 'How can we do the most with less?'"
