Kansas implements paperless title system

Monday, January 6, 2003

ATWOOD -- On Jan. 1, Kansas became the ninth state to implement a paperless title system for motor vehicles.

Kansas residents who buy cars, trucks, motorcycles and trailers will no longer get printed, paper titles.

Sheila Walker, director of the state's Division of Vehicles, said in a story in the Rawlins County Square Deal that financial institutions appreciate the added security of paperless titles. Vehicle owners won't have to keep track of titles, she said, and the state will be able to issue titles more efficiently, with fewer data entry errors.

Walker said until a lien is released, an owner should rely on the vehicle registration receipt as an ownership document. Walker said, "With a paperless title, the vehicle is still in their name, but without the expensive title paper and security features."
