Police issue ice warning

Monday, January 6, 2003

The McCook Police Department is asking all parents to speak to there children about the dangers of playing on ice on area ponds, like those at Barnett Park, this winter.

The department has received numerous calls over the last few weeks from concerned citizens about children playing unattended on ice at the park. Authorities report that the ice is not thick enough to support any weight and anyone is at great risk of falling through the ice and drowning.

The police department has already received one report of a child falling through the ice who escaped without injury.

Officials stress that the weather has not been consistently cold enough to form a solid ice covering.
