City applies for grant

Thursday, January 30, 2003

The McCook City Council is applying for a $100,000 grant to build a new transfer station and recycling center.

The application for a grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Quality to build a new transfer station/recycling center had been tabled during the council's regular meeting Monday, Jan. 20, until further information was available.

During Wednesday night's special meeting, there was brief discussion regarding the wording of the resolution to approve the application.

Councilman Dick Trail made a motion to approve the grant contingent on receiving an additional $400,000 grant from the Environmental Trust Fund.

Councilman Phil Lyons argued that the council should consider the $100,000 grant application and concern itself with the $400,000 grant when the application deadline approached in September.

Trail withdrew his amendment and the grant application was approved 4-0.

Councilman Jerry Reitz arrived late for the meeting and did not vote on the issue.

Following the grant application discussion, the council went into closed session to discuss potential litigation and union negotiations.
