Finalist selected for college president

North Platte -- Three candidates with experience ranging from North Platte to the United Arab Emirates were selected as finalists for the presidency of Mid-Plains Community College by the board of governors Wednesday night.

The three finalists are Charlotte J. Lee, Ph.D.; Michael Chipps, Ph.D.; and Marvin E. Lane, Ed.D. They were selected from a pool of 35 applicants by a search committee made up of college personnel and community members from all areas of the institution's service area.

Dr. Charlotte Lee is President of Terra Community College in Fremont, Ohio. She has held that position since 1993. She has experience in both academic and vocational education. She has held positions as college dean, dean of academic affairs, and has a variety of teaching experiences.

Lee holds a doctor of philosophy in higher and adult education with an emphasis in community college administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her master of education is from the University of Arkansas, and her bachelor of arts in elementary education with a minor in music literature from Concordia College in River Forest, Ill.

Dr. Michael Chipps is currently vice-president of North Platte Community College. He recently completed 23 years of service at Central Community College in Hastings, serving in a variety of senior academic and student affairs positions including serving as the assistant to the college vice-president of educational services, dean of students and assistant to the president roles.

Chipps holds a doctorate in educational administration, curriculum and instruction specialization in management of colleges and universities from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His master of science in education with a specialization in counseling is from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

He holds a bachelor of science in education with a specialization in sociology/psychology from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Chipps recently retired from the U.S. Army Reserve at the rank of major.

Dr. Marvin Lane recently was the director of Fujairah Women's College in the United Arab Emirates. Prior, he was president of Lamar Community College from 1982 until 1999.

Lane has a wide range of experience in post-secondary and K-12 public school arenas including teaching, public school superintendence and high school principal positions. Lane holds a doctor of education in general educational administration from the University of Northern Colorado.

His master of arts is in elementary remedial reading and bachelor of arts in elementary education with a minor in science are both from the University of Northern Colorado.

As has been planned, the MPCC Board of Governors will now take over the interview process. It is expected that their portion of the finalist process may take four to eight weeks to complete. The three finalists will now be invited to visit the institution to meet with both college personnel and the public. Once dates are finalized, a schedule for each candidate will be announced.
