A flying start

Friday, April 11, 2003

Luis Morantes runs alongside a kite flown Thursday by McCook's Head Start students. Luis and his friends were celebrating "The Week of the Young Child" and Head Start's 10th anniversary in McCook. Head Start is a comprehensive preschool program that helps more than 752,000 children from low-income families. In support of Head Start, a fund-raising campaign, called "Dollar Per Child," will help finance the Government Affairs Division of the National Head Start Association, the only national organization dedicated exclusively to promoting and protecting Head Start. GAD/NHSA works directly with the U.S. Congress and President Bush's Administration to maintain the voice that Head Start children, families and staff must have to continue quality program services. The campaign's goal is to raise $1 for every child enrolled in Head Start. McCook's Head Start parents have donated $54, which has been supplemented by donations from Wal-Mart and the McCook Daily Gazette and, individually, from Melissa Blauvelt and Donna Donner. Additional donations may be sent to the McCook's Head Start, c/o Mid-Nebraska Community Action, 901 West E, McCook, NE 69001.
