MJH 8th, MHS 9th/10th squads compete at NP

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook Junior High eighth grade boys and girls track teams wrapped up their season Tuesday at the North Platte Invitational.

The freshman and sophomore girls team won its meet scoring in 15 of 17 events.

Coach George Briggs said "Excellent effort and depth were the difference."

Four girls set personal best on the day.

Kayla Wilson and Liz Banda each had bests in the discus. Wilson threw 99 feet, seven inches for third place and Banda threw 89 feet, eight inches for fifth place.

Courtney Moore placed third in the high jump with a personal best of five feet.

Jessica Watkins went seven feet, six inches in the pole vault, a personal best and good for a fourth place tie.

Jillian Bryant and Meghan Ecker each picked up wins in running events. Bryant won the 400 meter dash and Ecker won the 800 meter run.

Ashlee Huffman set a new seventh and eighth grade meet record in the discus with a throw of 105 feet.

Sara Montey placed sixth in the long jump (13 feet, five inches) and in a tie for third in the pole vault (7-0).

John Swanhorst had a big day in for the eighth grade boys.

Swanhorst won the 195 meter low hurdles in school record time, 26.5 seconds. He also picked up second in the 200 meter dash and 75 meter high hurdles.

Craig Fritz also set a new school record in the 400 meter dash. Fritz won the event with a time of 54.5 seconds.

Josh Cherry won the pole vault (9 feet, six inches), the 1600 meter run (5:04.09) and placed fifth in the 100 meter dash (12.7).

Overall the team placed second.

The freshman and sophomore boys teams picked up four first place finishes en route to a second place team finish.

Jeremy Young won the 110 meter high hurdles (15.7) and and was second in the 195 meter hurdles behind teammate Ross Jones. Jones won the event with a time of 26.15 seconds, while Young finished with a time of 26.2.

Shawn McMurtrey won the 1600 meter run. McMurtrey finished nine seconds ahead of second place with a time of 4:42.14.

Derek Ruppert picked up a win in the 200 meter dash. Ruppert and North Platte's Zach Becker each ran the race in 23.2 seconds with Becker placing second.
