BENKELMAN -- Maxine M. Shafer, 87, of Benkelman, died Sunday (May 18, 2003) at the Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colo.
She was born Dec. 7, 1915, at Max, to George and Civilla (Boyles) Mills and grew up in Max where she attended school. She was a member of the 1934 graduating class of Max High School.
In 1939, she married Harold "Swede" Jensen in California and to this union, a son, Dennis W. Jensen, was born. After her husband's death in 1951, she and her son returned to Max where she was employed as a school teacher.
In 1955, she married A.G. "Doc" Shafer at Benkelman, and they had another son, Jerry J. Shafer.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
Preceding her in death are her parents, George and Civilla Mills; husbands, Harold "Swede" Jensen and A.G. "Doc" Shafer; son, Dennis W. Jensen; five sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include her son, Jerry Shafer of Benkelman; daughter-in-law, Doris Jensen of Sidney; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be Friday, at 10:30 a.m., in the Forch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Norman Prather and the Rev. George Matthews officiating. Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. (MDT) at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests that memorials be given in her name to the Max Clubhouse Building Fund.
Arrangements are under the direction of Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman.
