OBERLIN -- Dennis L. Sloan, 84, died Monday (June 2, 2003) at the Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.
He was born March 11, 1919, in rural Selden, to Howard and Emma (Snell) Sloan. He was raised on a farm near Selden. He graduated from Selden Rural High School in 1937 and attended Strickler's Business College in Topeka, Kan., for two years.
He served in the U.S. Air Force and lived in seven different states and England. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
On June 20, 1942, he married Flossie Shields in Pasadena, Calif. He was a real estate broker. After retirement, he lived in Oberlin.
On Dec. 21, 1992, he married Luella (Gaines) Godfrey in Las Vegas, Nev.
He was a member of the Selden United Methodist Church, the Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70 and served as a Decatur County Commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Flossie; son-in-law, Mike McCarthy; brothers, Cleland, Gerald and Cloyce Sloan; and two sisters, Geraldine Munroe and Dorothy Brainard, who was his twin.
Survivors include his wife, Luella of Oberlin; sons, Steve Sloan and wife, Carol of Lawrence, Kan., and John Sloan and wife, Suzanne of Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Susan McCarthy of Gordon; step-son, Marvin Godfrey and wife, Charlotte of Whitewater, Kan.; step-daughter, Lola and husband, George Wessel of Selden; sisters, LaRaine Claar of Missoula, Mont.; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, 10 a.m., at the Selden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Russell Fincham officiating. Interment will be at the Oberlin Cemetery at Oberlin.
Visitation is Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin and Friday from 8 a.m. until service time at the church in Selden.
