Keith M. Sheldon of McCook passed away Wednesday (June 11, 2003) at Community Hospital of McCook at the age of 88. He was born Sept. 6, 1914, in Keith County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Minta Mae Sheldon; three brothers, Wallace, Stanley and Robert; two sisters, Beulah and Roseley; and his first wife, Lucille Sheldon on June 15, 1997.
He attended country school at District 44 in Keith County, where his family ranched, and graduated from Ogallala High School.
Keith moved to McCook in 1936, being transferred there by Safeway Food Stores. He married Lucille Gordon of McCook on Oct. 13, 1940. They had one son, Stephen. He purchased the "G" Street Market in 1945, expanding into the Sheldon's Markets, with two stores in 1951. He retired from the grocery business in 1971, selling the markets. After retirement, he continued to work and pursue other interests; enjoying his part-time work at Eakes Office Plus and as a night supervisor with the Electric Hose Plant. He later became a licensed real estate agent, selling real estate for seven years.
He served on the Mid-Plains Board of Governors from 1975-1986, receiving the prestigious Governors Service Award. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in McCook, serving on the board of deacons for many years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a member of the McCook Elks Club.
He married Lavonne Benton of McCook on Oct. 27, 2000. They enjoyed a special companionship.
He is survived by his wife, Lavonne Sheldon; son, Stephen Sheldon of Omaha; brother, Burton Sheldon of Grant; Lavonne's son and daughter, Gary Benton and wife, Lisa of Evansville, Ind., and Beverly and husband, Leigh Hoyt of McCook; close niece and nephew, Jackie and husband, Francis Friehe of Culbertson and Jim Phinney and wife, Patty of McCook. Other nieces and nephews and many friends also survive him.
Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at the First Assembly of God Church in McCook with the Rev. Charles Hooton and the Rev. Fred Sevier officiating.
Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home.
