LYONS, Kan. -- Velda Maxine Mack Gray, 83, died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at Lyons District Hospital in Lyons, Kan.

She was born April 27, 1920, to Clarence E. and Etta Avery Mack in Clay County, Kan.

On Oct. 1, 1941, she married Carol W. Gray in Salina, Kan. The couple resided in Chase, Kan., from 1951 to 1995 and then moved to Lyons. She was a secretary at Chase High School.

She was a member of the Chase Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women, the Carnation Chapter of the Eastern Star No. 276, the Chase Past Matrons, the Chase Golf Club, all of Chase. She was a former Gray Lady at Lyons District Hospital, a thrift shop volunteer in Lyons and she was on the Rice County Election Board.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Orrel Dale Mack.

Survivors include her husband, Carol of Lyons; two sons, Dennis G. Gray of Stuttgart, Ark., and Charles M. "Chuck" Gray and wife, Janet, of McCook; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services are Friday, 10:30 a.m., at Chase Presbyterian Church in Chase with the Revs. Jesse and Arlene Patrick officiating. Graveside services are Friday, 4 p.m., at Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center, Kan.

Visitation is 7-8 p.m., Thursday, at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons.

Memorial may be given in her name to the American Center Society or to the donors choice and left at the funeral home.

Sillin Funeral Home of Lyons and Sterling, Kan., is in charge of the arrangements.
