LUDELL -- Gertrude B. (Vrbas) Havel, 85, died Thursday (July 31, 2003) at Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, Colo.
She was born Oct. 16, 1917, to Frank J. and Mary Margaret (Bartosovsky) Vrbas in Newkirk, Okla. She grew up on a farm and attended school near Beardsley, Kan.
On June 23, 1942, she married Joseph Havel at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church near Beardsley. The couple resided on a farm southeast of Atwood until the summer of 2002. She then resided at Fairview Estate Retirement Center in Colby, Kan.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers Altar Society, both of Atwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Helen and Alice; three brothers, William, Frank and Bernard.
Survivors include her husband, Joe of Colby, Kan.; three daughters, Jane Mentlick and husband, Joe of Colby, Karen Willmore and husband, Larry of Golden, Colo., and Mary Pate and husband, Phil of McCook; three sons, Larry Havel and special friend, Rebecca Rhea of Colby, Bill Havel and Roger Havel and wife, Teresa, all of Atwood; five sisters, Antoinette Horinek and Marian Ruda, both of Atwood, Adella Harry of Colby, Martha Souchek and husband, Bud of Arvada, Colo., and Frances Ham and husband, John of Brighton, Colo.; two brothers, Charles Vrbas and wife, Mary of Palisade and Raymond Vrbas and wife, Carolyn of Hays, Kan.; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial is Monday, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards officiating. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood.
A parish vigil and Christian Mothers rosary will be recited Sunday, 7 p.m., at Williams Funeral Chapel in Atwood.
Visitation is Sunday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in her name.
