HASTINGS -- The McCook High School sophomore volleyball team, coached by George Briggs, MHS assistant, lost its first match of the season at Hastings Thursday 15-8, 15-11.

McCook's leading server was Alex Achilles, who was 10-for-12 with 7 points.

Top setters were Angela Lichtenwaldt, 10-for-11 1 assist, and Julie Howard 17-for-22 with 5 assists. Jessica Fritsch was the top hitter. She was 8-for-8 with 6 kills.

"For the first match as a sophomore team, I thought the ladies represented themselves well," Briggs said. "The team's stats indicated we served well (86 percent), spiked the ball well (eight hitting errors on 21 attacks) and set the ball well (10 assists out of 34 set attempts). "I thought Alex Achilles and Jessica Fritsch had very good matches."

Next match for the sophomores is at Lakeside Central on Tuesday.
