Police warn of new e-mail credit card scam

Thursday, June 19, 2003

Today's modern technology has made it possible for a new credit card scam to make its way to McCook.

The McCook Police Department has received information from a McCook resident who received an e-mail message advising that an order was made at a Best Buy web site with their credit card information.

"Dear customer:

Recently we have received an order made by using your personal credit card information. "This order was made online at our official Best Buy web site on June 17.

"Our Fraud Department has some suspicions regarding this order and we need you to visit a special Fraud Department page at our web store where you can confirm or decline this transaction by providing us with the correct information.

"This e-mail address had been taken from National Credit Bureau."

The resident called the credit card company and was advised not to visit the Web site as that is where the actual theft of the corrected credit card information was stolen. Police officials attempted to access the Web site and were unsuccessful. If you suspect you are the victim of this or other possible fraud, please contact the McCook Police Department at (308) 345-3450 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 345-5440.
