Hot times no problem for fair

ST. FRANCIS -- Very hot late-summer weather did little to discourage fair-goers at the Cheyenne County Fair in St. Francis last week.

"We'll always sit there and watch a parade," said Dawn Lucas, a coordinator of Saturday morning's parade.

Dawn said the parade's 80 to 90 entries were judged this year by a team of three -- a man, a woman and a child. "It was something different," Lucas said, including the child's perspective. "It worked well," she said, "adding a child's input."

Lucas said other fair activities -- the barbecue, humorist Baxter Black's performance and the demo derby -- also attracted good crowds.

"The kids rode and rode and rode the carnival rides," Dawn said. "The weather didn't shut it down."

The grand champion prize parade entry was from First National Bank, and the Cheyenne County Hospital and Clinic earned reserve champion honors. Other winners were:

Commercial: 1. First National Bank; 2. Stevens Kansas Territorial.

Family/kids: 1. Sidney Busse; 2. Sara Miller and Andrea Holzwarth.

Churches: 1. Living Water Fellowship Ministries.

Organizations: 1. St. Francis Sharks Swim Team; 2. Relay for Life.
