Two landmark events are set for McCook this week, with the official opening of a major McCook Community College facility and the visit of a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibit at the Museum of the High Plains.

Ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremonies for the McCook Community College Welcome Center, Student Success Center and Ben F. Hormel Center for Business and Technology are set for 10 a.m. Thursday.

The event will include the ribbon cutting and rededication of McMillen Hall and the Welcome and Student Success Center, the grand opening of the Ben F. Hormel Center for Business and Technology, and the grand opening of the Center for Advanced Studies.

Thursday marks the opening of "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future," a traveling Smithsonian exhibit funded by the Nebraska Humanities Council, at the Museum of the High Plains on Norris Avenue in McCook.

Special displays and events are planned around town while the exhibit is here, through Oct. 5.

They include a futuristic film series at McCook Community College, a display at McCook Public Library, an architectural program next Monday and a medical display at Community Hospital.
