COZAD -- The McCook American Legion Juniors baseball team blasted Cozad 14-2 in a six-inning run-rule game Thursday at Cozad.

The Juniors, now 6-4, rapped out 15 hits and took advantage of 11 Cozad errors.

Both Tony Purvis and Brett Burton made their first appearances on the mound for McCook.

Purvis started and pitched the first five innings. Burton mopped up the final frame. The duo allowed five hits.

McCook Juniors coach Jade Muehlenkamp said he felt both hurlers fared well in their inaugural mound efforts.

"Tony Purvis threw around the (strike) zone a lot," Muehlenkamp said. "He strung out his walks, which helped us out a lot. Brett Burton showed me that he can throw strikes."

The Juniors scored five runs in the top of the first inning, two in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Brendan Liess went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two runs scored. Ross Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Mark Rogers went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.

Tyler Wilson went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Mason Pohl went 2-for-4. Jeff Klug doubled. Brad Potthoff singled in a run. Brandon Kotschwar singled in two runs. Alex Sughroue went 0-for-4.

"We came out right away and the first four batters got hits," Muhelenkamp said. "We needed to get out on Cozad early.

"Mason Pohl did a good job of catching for us in this game and the Holdrege game (an 11-9 victory on Wednesday). He made a couple double plays and threw out two runners trying to steal."

The Juniors compete in the Lexington Tournament today. McCook has a rematch with Cozad at 9 a.m. and takes on Fort Morgan, Colo. at 1:30 p.m.

Depending on whether McCook wins or loses in either of those games, the team will play at 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., or 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
