McCook 18 Rebels 2nd at Clay Center

CLAY CENTER, Kan. -- The McCook Rebels 18 and under softball team captured second place at the Clay Center, Kan., Tournament Saturday and Sunday.

The Rebels posted a 4-3 record.

Abilene Eagles 2,

McCook 0

Erica Reitz and Lisa Friehe each hit one single.

Abilene scored both runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lisa Friehe pitched with 12 strikeouts, four hits and 1 walk.

"We got off to a slow start Saturday morning and just couldn't get the bats going," said Rebels coach Mark Friehe.

McCook 3,

Chapman 0

Reitz tripled, Lisa Friehe doubled and singled, Melissa Ankersen, Lindsey Dame, Kaitlin Powell and Kassi Cunningham each singled.

Ankersen hit a single in the bottom of the first inning and advanced to second on Dame's sacrifice bunt, then scored on Friehe's RBI single.

Dame singled in the bottom of the second inning and scored on Reitz's triple.

Reitz scored on Powell's RBI single for the third run. Friehe pitched with 10 strikeouts, three hits and no walks.

McCook 13,

Delphos 1

Whitney Korte hit three singles. Reitz tripled and doubled. Kim Weber tripled and singled.

Friehe double and singled. Cunningham hit two singles.

Ankersen, Dame, Powell and Amber Watson each singled.

Korte, Powell and Dame shared pitching duties with two strikeouts, two hits and two walks.

Ankersen and Friehe each doubled and singled. Powell hit two singles.

Dame, Reitz, Korte and Weber each singled.

Lisa Friehe pitched with 17 strikeouts, two hits and three walks.

"This was one of our classic defensive battles with the score tied at 0-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning," said Mark Friehe.

The Rebels began the eighth inning with the international tie breaker ruling starting Watson on second base.

Watson advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Brooks, then scored on Reitz' single, who then scored on Lisa Friehe's double.

Lisa Friehe scored on Powell's single for the third run of the inning.

"We held Clay Center scoreless in the bottom of the eigth inning for the win," Mark Friehe said. "Clay Center was a very good ball club and was 3-0 when we played them.

"Our defense once again shined holding them to two hits and scoreless in the game."

Powell hit two doubles. Reitz and Lisa Friehe each hit a double and a single.

Ankersen and Korte each hit a double. Brooks hit two singles.

Dame, Cunningham and Watson each hit a single.

"This was one of our strongest offensive efforts in the tournament," Mark Friehe said.

"We had 13 hits -- six were doubles -- against a pretty strong pitcher."

Watson reached first base in the top of the third inning on a walk and Ankersen was hit by a pitch.

Brooks' sacrifice bunt advanced them to second and third. Watson and Ankersen both scored on Erica Reitz' double.

Reitz scored on Lisa Friehe's double.

Korte started off the fourth inning with a double and Kassi Cunningham walked.

They advanced to second and third on Watson's sacrifice single and scored on Ankersen's RBI double.

Ankersen scored on Natalie Brooks single. Brooks stole second and third base and scored on Reitz's sacrifice.

Ankersen walked in the top of the sixth, advanced on a passed ball and a steel and scored on Reitz' RBI single for the eighth and final run.

Lisa Friehe pitched with nine strikeouts, no hits and no walks.

Council Grove 3,

McCook 0

Brooks, Powell and Korte each singled.

Council Grove scored one run in the second inning and two in the third.

Brooks pitched with seven strikeouts, nine hits and one walk.

Championship

Ankersen and Powell each hit two singles. Cunningham hit a double.

Brooks, Reitz and Friehe each hit a single.

McCook scored its lone run when Powell hit a single in the top of the second inning.

She advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Cunningham's RBI double.

Brooks pitched with two strikeouts, six hits and three walks.

"We had a number of errors in this game that contributed to most of the runs," Mark Friehe said.

"Overall we played very well in the tournament and our girls were deserving of the second-place trophy.

"We played competitive teams that we haven't seen this year."
