Matt Serbousek's two-hit shutout highlights McCook Seniors Eastern Nebraska tour

Tuesday, July 1, 2003

The McCook National Bank Seniors traveled to the eastern part of the state to compete in three games last Friday and Saturday.

Friday MNB defeated the Omaha Ravens 2-0.

Matt Serbousek had the pitching duties for MNB. Serbousek pitched a complete game shutout while allowing only three hits and striking out 11 Omaha batters.

"Serbousek pitched well and kept them off balance all day," MNB coach Tye Hallowell said.

With Serbousek's mesmerizing performance on the mound the MNB offense didn't need to overproduce.

Leadoff hitter Adam Kotschwar reached base in the top of the first off of a walk. Kotschwar proceeded to steal second base and reach third base when Serbousek grounded out to the second baseman.

MNB's leading hitter, Jeff Holthus, then drove Kotschwar in to score with a RBI single to shallow right field to put MNB on top 1-0.

MNB got their second run in the third inning when Serbousek reached base on a fielder's choice and rounded to second via a past ball.

Spencer Walter smacked a RBI single to drive in Serbousek and that would conclude all offensive production for both teams.

On Saturday, MNB played a doubleheader at Blair.

MNB dropped the first game of the twinbill 4-3 in extra innings.

Jeff Holthus got the start on the mound for MNB and delivered what Hallowell called a "fantastic pitching performance."

Holthus allowed two runs on five hits in his five and one-third innings of work. Derick Lorentz relieved Holthus in the sixth innings.

Lorentz finished the game for MNB and gave up two runs on four hits in two and two-thirds innings.

Blair striked first with a single run in the first frame.

MNB replied quickly in the second when Wade Felker and Eric Anderson both scored to put MNB on top 2-1.

The game would remain at 2-1 until the fifth inning when Derick Lorentz crossed the plate to extend MNB's lead to 3-1.

Blair put up a single run in the bottom of the fifth to bring them back within one run of MNB, 3-2.

MNB went into the bottom of the seventh inning with a single run lead over Blair.

MNB could not hold Blair as the first batter in the frame would score via a sacrifice fly that would eventually send the game into extra action.

The eight inning would not come out in MNB's favor as Blair would come away with a victory 4-3.

"To lose in the eighth inning is disappointing but we have nothing to feel bad about because it's two great teams and one of them has to lose," Hallowell said.

MNB dropped the second game of the doubleheader 8-6. Matt Beckenhaur pitched every inning for MNB.

Beckenhauer gave up eight runs on 10 hits while striking out five in his six innings on the mound.

MNB scratched to an early lead when Adam Kotschwar, who reached base initially with a single, scored the first run of the game on an error in the first inning.

The MNB offense struck again in the second inning when Derick Lorentz crossed the plate off of a Jared Muehlenkamp single to put MNB up 2-0.

Blair put up a single run in the third frame of play to bring the score to 2-1.

Jeff Holthus popped up a sacrifice fly to score Muehlenkamp to stretch the lead back to two in the fourth inning 3-1.

Blair had a breakout inning in the bottom of the fourth by scoring five runs off of four hits in the inning to capture the lead 6-3.

MNB couldn't muster a comeback in either the fifth or sixth innings while Blair tacked on one run in both the fifth and sixth innings.

MNB did make a run in the seventh innings. Quinton Pohl started off the offense with a double.

Eric Anderson drove home Pohl with a double of his own. Jared Muehlenkamp then scored Anderson from second and himself with a home run to bring MNB within two, 8-6.

However, that was as close as MNB would get. Hallowell was not disappointed with the double losses.

"Blair is easily one of the best teams in Class B," Hallowell said.

We can't wait for an opportunity to play them again because we feel confident that we will be able to beat them."

After the weekend action MNB's season record is now 21-13.

MNB will compete against Ogallala tonight at the Jaycees Sports Complex starting at 8 p.m.
