Clark, Attwood score wins at Oberlin

Monday, August 18, 2003

OBERLIN -- Marty Clark, Russell, Kan., and Troy Attwood, Blue Hill, both picked up their first wins of the season at Oberlin Speedway Saturday.

Clark took the lead at the drop of the green of the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event and led wire-to-wire. Four cautions kept the field close but each time Clark was up to the task. Doug Holzmeister of Colby worked his way to second on lap 7 and stayed within a car-length of Clark most of the race.

Holzmeister even passed Clark for the lead on lap 17, but a caution gave Clark the lead back on the restart.

Holzmeister and David Murray tangled on the final lap, allowing Barry Richards to move to second. Rick Schwab, Brice Riley and Jim Arnold rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Murray and Clark.

Ten cars took the green in the IMCA Stock Car feature with Bob Chalupa in front, but Kelly Ford took the point on lap 2. Attwood worked his way to second by the halfway mark of the 15-lap race, then passed Ford for the lead on lap 9 and drove on to the checkers.

Ford held on for second, followed by heat two winner Billy Smith, Jason Schoenberger and J.R. McCreery.

Heat one winner Mark Zorn finished sixth.

Jason Koch of Cambridge took the lead on lap 4 of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature from heat race winner Chris Cuellar and drove on for his second win of the year at Oberlin.

Cuellar finished second, followed by point leader Cliff Davis.

Selden's Jason Rogers took the top spot of the Bomber feature from Oberlin's Paul Tally on lap 2 and sailed off to victory lane.

Cory Struckhoff charged to second, trailed by Kelly Karnopp, Dave Meitl and Rick Touslee.

It was Rogers' third win of the year at Oberlin.

Heat race winners were Jay Hackmeister and Jason Davis.

Rex and Jeanette McClain of Beaver City were in the right place at the right time to score their third Cruiser feature win of the season on the 3/8-mile oval.

Joey and Jimmy Carter of Russell had a big lead until their rear-end broke late in the race, giving the lead and the win to the McClains.

Jeff and Mike Doty finished second, followed by Jon Fisher and Dan Morford.

Cole Stragey and Britton Scott won the first heat race, while the Carters topped heat two.

The Mini Trucks were also in competition where Josh Bopp picked up wins in both the heat race and the feature.

The final race of the 2003 season takes place at Oberlin Speedway on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Start time will be 6 p.m.
