Katherine Morell first at McCook Invite

McCook High School junior Katherine Morell opened the 2003 fall golf season by capturing first-place medalist honors at the McCook Invitational.

The 18-hole, par-72 tournament was played at McCook's Heritage Hill Golf Course.

Morell, an 11th-place finisher at the Class B state tournament in 2002, fired an 80. She shot 38 on the front nine holes and 41 on the back nine holes.

Morell won the individual title by four strokes over Minden's Kristen Kosch, who shot 39 on the front and 45 on the back for an 84.

Ogallala's Ellen Anderson and Teeyl Sutton finished third and fourth at 91 and 92. Holdrege's Kim Imel was fifth, 93; Lexington Erin Ondrak, sixth, 98; Minden's Whitney Schwenka, seventh, 98; Holdrege's Joelle Rehnberg, eighth, 101; Gothenburg's Jill Clymer, ninth, 102; and Minden's Lindsey Exstrom, 10th, 103.

McCook sophomore Lesley Nelson just missed the medals by three strokes with a 106 score.

Minda Haas shot 140 and Tina Nemechek 151. Kristy Osterman played just nine holes and shot a 69.

Minden won the team title with a 394 score, edging out Ogallala by three strokes. Holdrege was third with a 407 score, followed by Lexington 436, McCook 477 and Gothenburg 497.

The McCook Bison girls golf team will compete in the Sidney Invite next Thursday and the North Platte Invite Friday. Both meets start at 9 a.m.
