The McCook Bison softball team overcame seven fielding and throwing errors and some mental ones to defeat Lexington 5-3 Tuesday night at Jaycees Sports Complex.

The Bison, ranked No. 2 in Nebraska Class B by the Omaha World Herald, improved to 10-0.

Senior Lisa Friehe pitched a one-hitter. She struck out six and walked one.

"It was not a pretty game, making that many errors," said McCook softball coach Dale Lortz. "But most of them were physical and that can be corrected."

Lexington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with the help of two Bison errors.

McCook tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Friehe singled and was replaced on the basepaths by courtesy runner Kassi Cunningham. Cunningham later scored when senior Melissa Ankersen legged out an infield single.

Lexington took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning on a leadoff single, sacrifice bunt and another McCook error.

McCook scored four runs in the bottom of the frame. Jillian Bryant led off with a drag bunt base hit and Kaitlin Powell reached base when her bunt was misplayed.

An error on Kim Serbousek's ground ball loaded the bases.

Freshman Michelle McKenna's pinch-hit single tied the score at 2-2. Michelle Gaunt singled and then Lindsey Dame drove in the go-ahead run with a ground ball. Friehe singled in the fourth run of the rally.

Lexington scored one run in the seventh after two walks. The next batter bunted and was thrown out at first.

Andrea Soden, who replaced Kim Serbousek at first base, made a solid defensive play on a slow roller as the Lexington's third run scored.

A grounder to Haney ended the game.

McCook picked up seven hits off Lexington pitcher Leah Luther, including a pinch-hit single by Kori Collins.

"The kids did a great job of coming back after we got down," Lortz said. "A team is going to have a few games like that in a season playing as many games as we do.

"That was a big with Lexington in the district."

The Bison will have a few days to rest up for Saturday's Columbus Tournament. McCook plays Grand Island at 11 a.m. at the four-field Bradshaw Park Complex.

Other first-round matchups starting at 11 a.m. are Norfolk vs. Lincoln High, Lincoln Southeast vs. Columbus and Beatrice vs. North Platte.

Consolation and semifinal games start at 1:15 p.m., followed by seventh-, fifth-, third- and first-place games are slated for 3:30 p.m.
