A New Type of Blog

Posted Thursday, September 27, 2007, at 8:55 PM

So there's this new fangled place called China that no one really knows anything about...
I apologize for my long departure, dear readers. I took upon myself a quest which seemed to take longer than I thought. The task of writing about this quest also seemed daunting beyond belief but I've decided that it's time to put up or shut up.

Within the past month I've experienced a lot of firsts.

First time abroad.

First time living in a different country.

First plane trip. I took 4 at once.

First boat ride.

First train ride.

First subway ride.

I suppose all of these firsts make me sound like sort of a country bumpkin. A hillbilly from the technological age, if you will, but my excuse is simply that I've always had my own car and never needed other ways to travel aside from it until now.

I've moved to China. One of those mysterious Asian countries that everyone talks about but few really experience. I am currently teaching English to college students while I am still yet a college student myself. The experience is nothing short of surreal. Moving to a country whose culture is so vastly different from your own is much like removing Oxygen from your daily intake. How do I breathe? What will I do? How can I survive?

The key, so far, is to not get overwhelmed with such magnanimous questions. I found myself nearly breaking down the first few days from sheer overload. How the hell am I going to survive this??!If you've ever seen the movie, "What About Bob?" you'll know that the key philosophy I'm utilizing here is...baby steps.

For those of you who wish to look it up on a map. I'm currently in Xiangtan, Hunan. This is the birthplace of Chairman Mao. He was one of the major people in China's Communistic movement and has become a folk hero much like George Washington.

More to come.

Holy cow! I don't check in for a while and when I do you're in another country! Jeesh! I thought my three years living in Texas was about as foreign a place as I'm willing to live away from Nebraska. Well, best of luck to you, Nate. I look forward to hearing more.
